This project is near and dear to my heart as my first large public teaching garden and program design. The site has matured and now there is a straw bale eco-kitchen to compliment the garden. Also on site are demonstration composters, a fruit hedge, xeriscaping, a native restoration project, a green roof (on the kitchen), and water catchment.
When we designed the program in the late 90’s, we included an expansion plan and treated it as a program, not just a site. This approach has served well and the program and site have made it through many City of Toronto reorganization and budget cut processes. It helps that the garden is well used and loved by members of the public. Garden Jane has offered many permaculture design and gardening workshops, courses and discussion groups at the site over the years. The City staff that run the site and program teach others how to set up and run children’s gardens. Visit them and learn more about school programs and camps.
