Description
Seed balls are near and dear to our hearts. Seed balls are made by mixing dry clay, compost, seeds and water. They were invented by Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer, who worked to grow naturally with as little intervention and for as much yield as possible. What we’ve learned from Fukuoka and our own experiments is that seed balls are great for:
- vegetable and cover crops
- supporting pollinators, bees, butterflies and birds
- nourishing seeds and soil
- reducing daily watering during spring
- protecting seeds from birds and squirrels
- parties & garden groups
- lazy gardeners & guerilla gardening
- fun as an activity for ages 3-99
- ecological restoration of deserts (no kidding!)
At Garden Jane, we believe seed balls work so well as an activity, that we decided to help families and teachers access it by creating seed ball kits. We have five types of kits for sale:
Mild Salad Mix
Spicy Salad Mix
Birds & Bees Mix (good for butterflies too)
Feed the Birds Mix
Just the Basics (add your own seeds)
The kits include food-safe dry red clay, worm compost, instructions and local organic seeds (unless you buy the “Add your own seeds” version). A kit makes ~100 seed balls about the size of a nickel. One kit is the right amount for a class, club or birthday party. It also works well for a person or family wanting to spread some lettuce around their garden or to grow in pots on a windowsill!
You might also want to try making seed balls with your own seeds, so we sell the basics too. Seeds you can add yourself: lettuce greens, chard, beets, kale, arugula, radish, mustard, and cover crop/green mulches like clover, rye.
Let us know how they grow! And if you love making seed balls and you want to scale up on supplies and the process to do cover areas, we are happy to help you figure that out.
Send us a note if you’d like the Seed Ball Revolution kids story too.
Note: We’ve applied a shipping and handling fee of $14.00 for the first kit, and $2.00 for every additional kit (Canada only). If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, we can probably arrange to drop them off to you or have you pick them up at no charge (so select the “local pick up” option if you’re in the Greater Toronto Area).
